I had an interesting patient today who has had leg pain for months. The pain was felt running down the right leg from the buttocks and was worse in sitting. Sometimes he felt the pain shoot down the leg for no apparent reason. The patient thought he had sciatica, however his sciatic nerve tests were normal. The CT scan did show L5/S1 disc damage which often gives people leg pain.

On further testing I found the patient had trigger points deep in the gluteus minimus. This trigger point can mimmick sciatica, so it is an easy one to miss especially when there obvious disc damage on the CT scan. This is a little muscle that is found deep and on the outside of the hip. When I pressed on the trigger points it gave the same leg pain running down the outside of the leg and towards the foot.

I decided on using the technique of dry needling to get to the deep trigger points and boy did I get the spot. Once the needle hit the trigger point the patient said “that’s it, that is right on the spot”. When I get that reaction I know I am working in the right area.

After the treatment I showed the patient how to release the gluteus minimus trigger point at home on a daily basis. I will see him in 10
days and I expect there to significantly less pain.

The human body is amazing complex and that is why it is so rewarding to help someone get out of pain and live a normal healthy life.
